what the archive is about

The Living Archive explores the potential of (post)industrial heritage to transform production in our cities. We collect stories with participatory heritage methods. The nodes for the local collection efforts are Fab City Hubs (FCH). The collection has been carefully assembled by FCH teams who have been learning about, co-creating and applying participatory heritage-making approaches, emotion networking methodology, oral history principles and creative perspective-taking.

For the love of wood

Bernat is a woodcarver based in Barcelona. He’s been woodcarving since 2016, when he attended a local workshop where he learned relief and chip carving techniques. Early on in this journey he focused on creating pieces of art and carved commissions for clients, which helped him to develop and improve his carving skills.

His studio space in Macus Cooperative, a shared woodshop in Poblenou serves as the hub for his creative practice. Over the past 2 years, he has found a new passion within woodcarving which is teaching people how to carve. He loves sharing what he has learned via workshops and classes and getting the opportunity to meet new people interested in woodcarving. Being able to see their progress inspires him and gives him purpose.

Why is this story relevant?

Collecting stories of local manufacturers still based in Poblenou as a strategy to knowing better the territory and valorizing its productive potential. As an artist based in Poblenou, Bernat's story can be a window into the neighborhood's vibrant productive scene and creative community.

Story is shared by Julia Steekete and Milena Juarez (interviewers and curators).
